Computer Security

  • Keep the software on your computer up-to-date by installing the most recent software patches.
  • Use current anti-virus and anti-spyware products that update automatically to protect against malicious software.
  • Practice safe internet use. Use caution when clicking on links to ensure they are from a trusted source.
  • Avoid accessing your financial or sensitive personal information online in hotels, internet cafes, public libraries, etc.
  • Use a password that is hard to guess (use a combination of characters including: upper case letters, lower case letters, numbers, and special symbols.)
  • Secure your computers with a password protected screen saver that has a timeout feature activated after no more than 15 minutes.
  • Keep your passwords private and secure.
  • When necessary, only provide personal information over encrypted websites. To determine if a website is encrypted, look for https at the beginning of the web address.

Email Security

  • Be suspicious of emails purporting to be from a financial institution, government department, or other agency requesting account information, account verification, or banking access credentials such as user names, passwords, pin codes and similar information, or requiring you to access additional information by clicking on links.
  • Use caution when opening attachments to ensure they are from a trusted source.
  • Use caution when opening links contained in emails to ensure they are from a trusted source.
  • Establish multiple email accounts to use for different purposes. This can help you keep your financial and sensitive email communications separate and secure.
  • Stay abreast of identified email scams.

Online Banking Account Security

  • Monitor your account and bill pay activity on a regular basis (daily if possible) and report any suspicious or unusual activity. Be aware of unauthorized small dollar amount transactions. This may be an indication that your account has been compromised and a fraudulent plan is in progress.
  • Periodically change your password (at least every 60 days).
  • Log off the system when you are finished conducting business.
  • Establish dual control for ACH and wire transactions. We strongly recommend adding this additional level of security, as it appears to be one of the most effective controls to prevent external and internal fraud.
  • Consider designating a “locked down” PC to accommodate only your online banking transactions. This computer should not be used for email or any other internet activities.
  • Update online banking user access in the event of employee terminations or changes in job responsibilities.
